The World Health Organization, 2016 has conceptualized mental health as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities, copes with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to his or her community”. Mental disorders have been considered a major contributor to morbidity and disability worldwide. Despite mental health issues being prevalent, many still neglect and overlook them due to many overlapping barriers such as accessibility issues, high pricing, stigma, discrimination, lack of resources, poor mental health literacy, and many more.
The School of Liberal Arts and Sciences has established HEART Psychological Services (HPS) under the Centre for Human Excellence and Development to promote integrated wellness, especially in mental health, and provide affordable psychological services to the community. HEART Psychological Services was launched in January 2022. HEART refers to Healing, Educating, Assessing, Relating, and Thriving, respectively.
HPS aims to offer affordable psychological services to improve the mental health well-being among the community. Such effort can increase the accessibility of psychological services, especially for those who may have financial constraints. There is a range of psychological services offered to the public since January 2022, such as psychotherapy, psychological assessments, psychological consultations, and psychological workshops and talks.
These services are conducted by the Master of Clinical Psychology students from Taylor’s University who are doing their Clinical Practicum and Seminar module. They are supervised by a team of experienced Clinical Psychologists. As part of the school’s plan to give back to society, HPS offers not just affordable services to the public but a complete fee waiver to underprivileged individuals to improve psychological services access to the community. For individuals from a disadvantaged background, services will be sponsored on a case-to-case basis based on formal application with HPS.
