Ms. Lum Kit Yee, Food & Beverage Lecturer from Taylor’s Culinary Institute and former Singapore Airlines Leading Stewardess, conducted an insightful workshop on professional grooming and personal presentation for hospitality students. Drawing on her extensive experience in the aviation and customer service industries, she shared valuable industry insights with both newly enrolled students and those preparing for internship placements. The session emphasised the importance of maintaining a professional image and adhering to industry grooming standards. Students were introduced to best practices in personal grooming, including appropriate hairstyles, professional attire, and overall presentation expected within hospitality and service environments. Strong emphasis was placed on the role of first impressions and how a polished appearance contributes to guest confidence, service excellence, and professional credibility.
To enhance experiential learning, students participated in a hands-on hairstyling activity, gaining practical exposure to industry grooming expectations. The interactive session enabled participants to develop a clearer understanding of professional standards and the importance of consistency in personal presentation. Ms. Lum also provided guidance on professional makeup application, highlighting techniques that promote a natural, refined, and service-appropriate appearance. She encouraged students to project confidence, professionalism, and authenticity while maintaining high standards of personal presentation in all guest-facing interactions.
Complementing the session, Dr. Anshul Garg, Programme Director from the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Events, shared grooming guidelines and professional image management tips tailored specifically for male hospitality professionals. His insights further reinforced the importance of personal branding and workplace readiness among students. Overall, the workshop served as a valuable platform for students to understand that professional grooming extends beyond physical appearance. It encompasses confidence, attitude, discipline, and the ability to represent both oneself and the organisation professionally. The session successfully reinforced personal branding as a key component of career readiness and long-term success in the hospitality industry.
