During the early hours at Taylor’s Lakeside Campus, Darlene Arifah could often be found with a third cup of coffee in hand, moving swiftly between the Grand Hall and classrooms to finalize performances or film edits. For her, the most meaningful learning occurred during these quiet, dedicated hours.

At the convocation for the graduating Class of 2026, during the Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management session, a representative from the School of Media and Communication (SOMAC) delivered a valedictory address celebrating perseverance, dedication, and the formative challenges of student life. Her speech emphasized the “uncomfortable” growth that arises from navigating deadlines, student-led initiatives, and rigorous academic demands.
As Vice President of the Taylor’s Lakeside Dance Club, she played a pivotal role in organising DZONE and DZONE 2.0, the university’s largest student-led dance festivals. Her commitment to excellence extended to filmmaking, from capturing the perfect shot for her Final Year Project to organising the Taylor’s University Film Festival in the very hall where she delivered her address. Her dedication culminated in representing Taylor’s at the International Student Media Art Festival in Korea, where she earned recognition alongside her collaborators.
Acknowledging the support of the “village” behind her journey, including parents, friends, and mentors, she invited her peers to collectively recognize those who had guided and encouraged them throughout their studies. Her final message urged the Class of 2026 to embrace challenges and seize opportunities without hesitation: “Take the leap. Embrace discomfort as a path to meaningful growth.”
Congratulations to the Class of 2026 on their achievements and contributions.
