Engagement Champion at MoodleMoot Malaysia: Bridging the Physical and Digital Classroom in HyFlex Environments

What if your digital learning platform could talk back, mentor, and prepare students so effectively that by the time they reached the classroom, they could skip the lecture and dive straight into high-level debate? This vision drove the transformation of the myTIMeS site for the course Philosophy and Curriculum Design, a project that recently earned Senior Lecturer Dr. Vinothini Vasodavan from the School of Education the prestigious Engagement Champion Award at MoodleMoot Malaysia. Accompanied by a trophy and official recognition, the award celebrates a design that successfully bridged the gap between the physical and digital classroom in a HyFlex environment.

The project’s success lay in turning a traditionally static repository into a dynamic, interactive learning ecosystem. By embedding AI-generated avatar videos and integrating Walter, the AI Learning Buddy from Noodle Factory, the site became a personalised learning hub. Walter acted as both a 24/7 peer buddy and teacher assistant, delivering multilingual, bite-sized content and personalised quizzes that diagnosed knowledge gaps in real time. This ensured that every student, regardless of their starting point, could navigate the complexities of philosophy before attending on-campus sessions.

The true impact was realised on campus. With content delivery and data-driven differentiation managed by Walter and the enhanced myTIMeS platform, on-site sessions were liberated from passive listening. Classrooms became hubs for collaboration, role-play, and complex problem-solving, allowing Dr. Vinothini to shift from content delivery to facilitating deep, human-centred learning.

This recognition from the MoodleMoot community underscores a core philosophy at the School of Education, Taylor’s University. Technology should extend the reach of the teacher, not replace them.
