“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” — Malcolm X

The School of General Studies & Languages (SGSL), Taylor’s University, in collaboration with the British Council, has successfully conducted its first International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic examination on campus, marking a significant milestone in the University’s language education initiatives. This milestone was initiated following a strategic directive by Prof. Dr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management, who entrusted the School with the establishment of an IELTS Test Centre to enhance visibility, strengthen academic positioning, and increase student enrolment. This achievement reflects SGSL’s commitment to expanding academic opportunities and strengthening English language provision through globally recognised qualifications.
At the core of this initiative is the recognition that IELTS serves not only as an assessment tool, but also as a bridge enabling students to access academic and professional pathways within and beyond the University. This collaboration further supports school's aspiration to position itself as a regional hub for English language education, offering students access to internationally benchmarked qualifications within a structured and supportive learning environment.

The project commenced on 28 February 2026 with an introductory session conducted by Mr. Timothy Teo from the English & Exams Department of the British Council. The session, attended by 48 Intensive English Programme (IEN) students, provided valuable insights into the IELTS examination and its role in supporting international academic progression. This was followed by a site visit on 6 March 2026 involving key stakeholders, including the Head of School, Dr. Prema Ponnudurai; IELTS Coordinator, Ms. Sharon Linang Jimbun; and representatives from the British Council, Mr. Timothy Teo and Ms. Siti Munirah Abdul Razak. The engagement facilitated constructive discussions on strengthening institutional collaboration and exploring opportunities to further enhance IELTS provision at Taylor’s University.
These efforts culminated on 27 March 2026 with the successful hosting of the first IELTS Academic examination on campus. A total of 33 students from the IEN programme participated in the sitting, marking an important step in expanding access to internationally recognised English language assessment opportunities. Looking ahead, the school will continue to build on this progress, with additional IELTS test dates tentatively scheduled for 31 July 2026 and 4 December 2026, aligned with the May 2026 and September 2026 IEN intakes respectively. These planned sessions reflect the University’s continued commitment to supporting students at key stages of their academic journey.
This milestone not only reflects Taylor’s commitment to academic excellence but also marks the beginning of broader engagement with the Klang Valley community, further strengthening the University’s role in advancing global education pathways.
