A virtual Asia MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Exhibitions) Youth Challenge organized by the Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA) was held via Zoom and Live streamed on AFECA Facebook and YouTube channel. This challenge aimed to provide the students with an opportunity to develop their creativity and present their unique ideas to the Business Events industry. The students applied what they have learnt in the classroom to conceptualize the business-testing and organizing business/international sporting events. This challenge also provided the students with the fundamentals of a bid process and technical requirements to enable them to be equipped to the research, plan, prepare and present a winning bid.
This challenge was open to all students from an accredited university or college within Asia. It was a platform for the future Asian MICE talents to outwit other participants by showcasing their genius novel event and to convince the judges why their country/area is "The Best MICE Destination in Asia!" For this edition, there were 19 teams from 10 countries consisted of Malaysia, Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan competing in the challenge. One team from Taylor's School of Hospitality, Tourism & Events (SHTE) Bachelor of International Events Management (Honours) Year 2 students represented Malaysia to participate in this challenge.
Heartiest Congratulations to Team Supernova consisted of Deborah Heidi Hamlet, Gloria Wynne Khorigin, Ahn Hyeri and Liaw Chuan Hwee, coached by the Lecturer Advisor Ms. Dhiya Hikmahana Abdul Razak for winning 1st Runner Up and The Best PowerPoint Presentation Award! This year's edition was judged by Micheal Kruppe, General Manager of Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC); Rosalind Ng, Honorary President of Singapore Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (SACEOS); Irwin Poon, President of Macao Convention & Exhibition Association (MCEA) and Francis Teo, President of Malaysia Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS). Team Supernova with their proposed business event ‘Women Sports Convention’, a convention that focuses on empowering women in sports, has caught the attention of the judges by receiving very good feedback.
The students worked hard for the past eight months in preparing for this challenge. Students were exposed to the actual process of event research, contacting event suppliers, preparing business plans with a realistic budget, went through an event bidding process, receiving comments/feedbacks during the presentation to the leading Industry Experts in Asia. The entire process and their eight-month journey have taught the students a valuable lesson. Besides that, the team had an opportunity to learn from the Industry Expert when they had a coaching session with Mr. Rahul Bharadwaj, Co-Founder of Anderes Fourdy Events and a Committee Member of the Malaysian Association of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS).
