On 25th September 2021, the School of Education in collaboration with the Research Centre for Future Learning (RCFL), organized a Webinar panel discussion on the PhD experience from the perspective of the students and the supervisors viewpoints. Members of the panel comprised two School of Education Senior Research Fellows, Prof. Arshad Samad and Prof. Chan Swee Heng, as well as two current PhD students in Education, Ms. Michelle Zhong and Ms. Wang Cancan. The panel was moderated by Prof. Dr. Moses Samuel.


More than 85 participants joined the discussion simultaneously on Zoom and YouTube. The lively panel discussion covered a range of related issues, including the nature of the PhD experience and what sets it apart from undergraduate and Masters by research experiences; the transitions that postgraduate students experience as they move from the master’s to the doctoral level. The two PhD candidates shared candid accounts of their struggles and challenges and the ‘cultural shock’ they had to navigate as they grappled with academic culture, or their prior learning experiences in different educational systems.


The panel also addressed the notion of students’ readiness for the PhD, and the unique challenges of pursuing a PhD programme during the Covid 19 pandemic conditions. The panel discussion contributed to raising awareness about the intricacies of the PhD experiences as seen from multiple perspectives.

The Union of Filipino Tourism Educators (UFTE) organized its General Membership Meeting for this year 2021 and Election of the new Board of Trustees on 9th September 2021 with the theme: “UFTE Moving Forward in 2021: Strengthening Academic Internationalization through Partnerships and Linkages.”


UFTE invited Dr. Kandappan Balasubramanian, Associate Professor, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Event & Associate Director, Human Capital Development of the Centre for Research and Innovation in Tourism (CRiT), Taylor's University to share his experience on the importance of international partnership, collaboration, and linkages, which creates and foster academic development in the Tourism and Hospitality Education landscape.


Dr. Kandappan as one of the Resource Speakers during the event discussed on the topic “Building Strong University Linkage Programs for the Advancement of Tourism & Hospitality Education: The Taylor’s University way!”. His expertise on this matter with the projects and strategies for successful networking and linkages, significantly made a great impression on the Filipino Academic Community in understanding the importance of international linkages.

On 7th October 2021, Taylor’s Culinary Institute was invited to participate in SMA Yos Sudarso Batam, an Indonesia school fair event. This school has a total of 300 students from year 10 to year 12. Around 90 students participated in the workshop titled “A Cup of Joe-Introduction to Barista Skills” presented by Ms. Michelle Lee Gee Wey, Programme Director, Diploma in Hotel Management and along with a student from our Diploma in Hotel Management programme, Ng Pooi Yee.


During the workshop, Ms. Michelle shared the barista basics which included the introduction of coffee, types of coffee beans, different types of coffee equipment and what are the skills required to be a barista. Meanwhile, Diploma in Hotel Management student, Ng Pooi Yee shared her knowledge on the various stages of coffee production from the farm to the cup which she has learned from visiting a coffee farm last year.


The workshop continued with a live demonstration from Taylor’s University, Mixology Lab where Ms. Michelle demonstrated skills of using semi-auto coffee machine that included brewing of espresso and techniques of making café latte using different equipment.


The participants were all excited and interacted with many questions about coffee. The workshop ended with a Kahoot fun activity. Prizes were given to the students.
