Saturday, 17 September 2022 marked the first involvement of the School of Media and Communication (SOMAC), Taylor’s University, in the World River Day. This event took place in Eco Park Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, Selangor where several activities were organized with the main objective of creating awareness on how important river is to mankind. Among the activities organized were tree planting programme, colouring competition, marathon, games and entertainment. The Student Council members of Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association (IPRMSA) from the School of Media and Communication were the main coordinator in getting seventy student volunteers for the tree planting programme.


The tree planting programme was officiated with the presence of the Chief Minister of Selangor, YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin bin Shari, where he too did his bit of tree planting, a symbolic to show how committed the State of Selangor is on preserving the nature and the environment. This programme was in collaboration with UMW Corporation Sdn Bhd and Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Selangor.

There were 700 bamboo trees to be planted where as many as 350 bamboo trees were planted by volunteers representing the Taylor’s University. Other volunteers during the tree planting programme were the Boy Scouts from Kuala Selangor Education District and Semai Bakti FELDA students. Apart from planting the trees, SOMAC Public Relations students were able to meet and make new friends with volunteers from different schools within Taylor’s University and with other students from outside of Taylor’s University.

The keyword for the day was teamwork and been exercised throughout the tree planting programme when Taylorian volunteers worked hand-in-hand with other volunteers who were Secondary school students. The volunteers also learnt how to listen and follow instructions from the key person of the tree planting committee. This was very important as with more than 100 volunteers participating in the programme, coordination and planning were essential for the given tasks on tree planting to be completed on time.

Taylor’s American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) celebrated their ‘Coming Out from Covid Lockdown’ by organizing its first physical activity – STEM Challenge in conjunction with Taylor’s Future Movement which took place at Taylor's University Lakeside Campus with over 100 participants, consisting of students from ADTP, high-school students with their teachers and parents.


The Challenge featured projects by Taylor's ADTP students from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) modules, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Calculus, and Programming.


The event consisted of multiple challenges, where participants form groups to solve problems with hands-on activities and complete various tasks designed and crafted by Taylor’s ADTP students.


There were three main challenges for each team to complete within a specific time. There were 3D Model Construction, Online game at the Chemistry Pit-stop, where participants explored science prototypes, played games, learned/applied science in the Physics pit-stop and lastly, pored through beautiful posters of famous mathematicians and learnt about their contributions while answering a series of trivia questions in the Mathematics & Computer Science station.

The event concluded with the Closing Ceremony led by ADTP’s Engineering & Computer Science Stream Coordinator, Dr. Wong Yau Hsiung and Program Director, Dr. Loh Kah Heng gave away the prizes to all successful participants. It was a successful Saturday morning, and the participants thoroughly enjoyed the activities and challenges, had lots of fun, and looked forward to return for another ADTP event.

Bachelor of International Events Management (Hons) students from Taylor's School of Hospitality, Tourism & Events (SHTE) and their Event Lecturer, Ms. Khairiah Ismail were involved in the 18th Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) held at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).


This event was officiated by the Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob. As part of the organizing committee, the students were required to plan and coordinate the MIHAS Photo and Video Competition with the theme of 'Muslim-Friendly Travel’ to exhibit the selected photos and videos for the final stage judging by the respective judgers from Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).

Through this involvement, the students had the opportunity to learn how to organize international exhibition and build networking for their upcoming projects and internship. The MIHAS organizer was very happy with the collaborative effort with Taylor's University as an education partner this year to assist them in organizing the Muslim-Friendly Travel Photo and Video competition that was open to all residing in Malaysia. MIHAS organizer is also interested to have another collaboration with Taylor's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events for MIHAS 2023 that is planned to be held in September 2023 at MITEC.
