Malaysiakini "Holding Power to Account on Custodial Deaths" Article by Dr. Benjamin Loh from SOMAC


Dr. Benjamin Loh Yew Hoong, Senior Lecturer, School of Media & Communication published an op-ed on the investigation into the Freedom Film Network on the necessity to keep authorities in check. Dr. Benjamin comments on how the law needs to allow space for NGO organizations to keep authorities in check.


This includes being able to investigate government wrongdoing, abuse of power, the misuse of public funds, and corruption with the recent issue of custodial deaths in Malaysia has become alarming in recent months, more recently on the short film “Chili powder and Thinner” in mid-June as part of the Freedom Film Festival that portrays an animated recollection of a person’s dark experience while being held under police custody.
