"Stop Blaming The Victim!" Negative Impact of Rape Culture on Victims of Sexual Abuse



Dr. Benjamin Loh, Senior Lecturer, School of Media and Communication was invited to speak about the prevalence of rape culture in Malaysia. This roundtable session was organized by Centre for Language Studies (CLS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), University Malaya. The panelists, each representing different stakeholders in addressing sexual abuse; authorities, civil society and academia discussed the challenges faced by victims of sexual assault who are often blamed despite being the victim.


Dr. Benjamin highlighted that there are immense obstacles within Malaysian society and traditions that places immense pressures on victims to not speak up and Malaysians need to start believing these victims when they speak up instead of accusing them of lying.
