Unpacking Insights on PISA Assessment by Prof. Dr. Moses Samuel Sparked Discussion among Policymakers & Educators in Malaysia

On January 11, 2024, Prof. Dr. Moses Stephens Gunams Samuel, a Senior Research Fellow from Taylor's School of Education, appeared as a guest on the Astro Awani programme "Consider This". This flagship talk show addresses contemporary policy issues, and the episode on January 11 focused on Malaysia's performance in the 2022 PISA assessments.

PISA, which stands for "The Programme for International Student Assessment" is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in member and non-member nations intended to evaluate educational systems and measures 15-year-old school pupils' scholastic performance on their reading, mathematics, and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. The tests explore how well students can solve complex problems, think critically and communicate effectively.

During the talk show, Prof. Dr. Moses discussed the potential systemic issues in Malaysian education that may have contributed to the dip in scores in 2022, despite the COVID-19 school closures. He also emphasized the implications for teacher education and literacy interventions throughout the school system. The talk show has garnered significant attention and has been cited by policymakers and educators in Malaysia.
