Taylor’s University and Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) - Retail and F&B Productivity Nexus (RFBPN) sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost productivity growth of the Retail and F&B Productivity Nexus of the Nation. The MOU was signed by YB Dato' Abdul Latif Haji Abu Seman, Director General of Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and Prof. Dr. Pradeep Nair, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Chief Academic Officer of Taylor's University, witnessed by Dr. Mohamad Norjayadi Tamam, Director of MPC Delivery Management Office and Prof. Dr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, Executive Dean of Taylor's Faculty of Social Sciences & Leisure Management.


Among the 11 Productivity Initiatives under MPC, this strategic collaboration will drive the talent development, future workforce, research, innovation and digitalization. The Sector Productivity Nexus covering nine subsectors, led by industry champions who have identified to role model for change, have been formed to drive the implementation of the initiatives. The Retail and F&B Nexus focuses on technology, workforce and industry structure with the focus on digitalization and e-commercial capabilities, sharing economy and growth in business.

The collaboration between Taylor’s University and MPC-RFBPN was commenced through the second Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between Taylor’s University and Kopitiam Asia Pacific (Old Town White Coffee) that made the Tripartite Collaboration completed. Prof. Dr. Pradeep Nair and Ms. Dawn Liew, Chief Executive Officer of Kopitiam Asia Pacific (Old Town White Coffee) did the symbolic signing, witnessed by Prof. Dr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan and Mr. Dennis Loo, Chief Operating Officer of Kopitiam Asia Pacific.

In the opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Pradeep assured that the Triple Helix of University-Industry-Government relations, the strategic collaboration will culminate with the introduction of the Retail and F&B Productivity Nexus at Taylor’s, joining the few that are already present throughout the Malaysia.


Whereas, YB Dato’ Abdul Latif Haji Abu Seman highlighted that MPC hopes that the synergy created through the RFBPN network and Taylor’s University is the way forward.


Mr. Deric Yeo, Champion of Retail and F&B Productivity Nexus and Chief Development Officer of Kopitiam Asia Pacific, remarked that Kopitiam Asia Pacific will take the lead to be the first company to experiment the collaboration with Taylor’s University which strongly supported by MPC, to boost the Old Town White Coffee brand into the highly value-added segment influencing other industry players.


During the closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Neethiahnanthan stated that this tripartite collaboration with the support of MPC-RFBPN and Kopitiam Asia Pacific will undoubtedly leverage on the network and communication to drive productivity in the Retail and F&B industry. He also preached that the next step is to collaborate with Keenon Robots as part of the Industry Academia collaboration to facilitate technology engagement for future research and innovation in the areas of digitalization, artificial intelligence and robotization for the hospitality and restaurant businesses.

The Virtual Classroom project is a teaching innovation from the School of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences & Leisure Management, Taylor's University that recently received a gold award at the International Innovative Competition on Languages, Education & Societies (IINNCOME 2022) on the theme of “Humanizing Learning, Teaching, and Societies in Digitalized Contexts''. The competition was organized by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Perlis, Malaysia which was held virtually by getting all the presenters to submit a video on teaching innovation. The title of the submitted project by Taylor's University was "Immersive Role-playing Micro-teaching Activities for Teacher Trainees Using the Engage VR Platform". This event involved four categories of participant - professionals, teachers/lecturers, higher education students and secondary school students. The purpose of this competition was to provide a platform for educators and students to showcase their teaching innovation in new directions in language pedagogy and technology integration in language teaching and learning.

Taylor's School of Education won another award at the International University Carnival on E-Learning (IUCEL) 2022 which was organized and hosted virtually by the University Putra Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Malaysian IPTA e-Learning Council (MEIPTA). The event received 439 entries from around the world to encourage and share best practices and global expertise in e-Learning at all levels of learning institutions. The team received a silver medal in the category of Invention, Innovation & Design on e-Learning (IIDEL). "Shaping Digital Ready Future Preservice Teachers with Virtual Reality Role-Playing Micro-Teaching Activities Using the Engage VR Platform," the project's title says.

Both projects aimed to promote Engage Virtual Reality (VR), an online Virtual Reality platform that provides an immersive virtual learning environment for teacher education programmes, particularly at Malaysian private higher learning institutions. The teaching innovation seeks to investigate the use of the Engage VR platform, which is the key technological enabler for achieving the goals of an immersive micro-teaching session that allows for life-like responsive engagements using avatars in a virtual environment.

Dr. P. Thivilojana S. Perinpasingam from School of Education led the both winning projects in collaboration with Dr. Charles Sharma Naidu and Mr. Faisal Athar Mohd Fadzil, the project team of Taylor's Virtual Online Future Technology and Extended Reality (VORTEX).



26 Senior Public Relations (PR) undergrads with zero work experience produced industry-standard deliverables worth RM350k for 7 startups that had little to no PR support in the past, all done and dusted in a whopping 35-day timeframe and highly commended by top-notch professionals of the industry!

After successfully launching the Venturous PR in November 2021, School of Media and Communication (SOMAC) student-led PR agency for startups and SMEs has been open for business since March 2022. Its inaugural set of clients were graciously awarded by Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC); seven homegrown startups from MDEC’s Malaysia Digital Hub - Loop Foods, BCN Smart Technologies Sdn Bhd, YesHello - WhatsApp Team Inbox, MyPaaa, Zonar, Virtualtech Frontier and Adzappr.

In just five weeks, 26 senior undergraduates from the Bachelor of Mass Communication (Hons) PR & Marketing programme developed the following deliverables for each of their startup clients:

  1. Six-month Comms Plan infused with novel ideas, complete with groundwork and easily executable by clients who have no PR know-how

  2. Feature Story published in Business Today

  3. Media Kit for the startups to hit the ground running with press interviews

  4. Brand Kit for consistency in communicating the Corporate Identity (CI)

  5. Professional Photoshoot of the founder(s), team and solutions

  6. Media Training session for the startup founders to fine-tune their storytelling skills
