The webinar "Cuisines as Cultural Heritage: A Dialogue Between Food Studies and Gastronomy” was held on the 18th of June 2021 (Friday) and gathered 250 registered participants and 200 views on Facebook. This event organized by School of Food Studies and Gastronomy and the Chair of Food Studies which aimed at providing a platform for dialog session on Food Studies and Gastronomy.


This webinar session led by Dr. Voltaire Cang, RINRI Institute of Ethics, Japan and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at School of Food Studies and Gastronomy along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Laurence Tibère, University Toulouse Jean Jaurès & CERTOP-CNRS, France and Chef Sharizan Azali Bin Mohamed Zamzuri, Taylor's University School of Food Studies and Gastronomy, Malaysia & Research Chef Association, USA.

The Post Graduate Programmes in Food Studies are offering students the opportunity to deepen their understanding on food cultures and food systems from the perspectives and methods of social sciences. One of the key research areas of the educational programmes consists in “Gastronomy, Heritage & Tourism” where processes of defining food heritages and their relations with the construction of collective identities are analyzed.


Research on food heritage is also undertaken by the Chair “Food Studies: Food Cultures and Health”. Created in August 2012 by Taylor’s University and University Toulouse Jean Jaures, its objectives are to: Participate in the development of the research profile of Taylors University and develop research partnerships. The webinar was able to bring together diverse fields of experts from all parts of the world (Asia-Pacific, Americas, Africa and Europe).

The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events (SHTE) held an exclusive event entitled the "GM Roundtable Online Forum: 🔴STOP. 🟡LOOK. 🟢GO!" for the Master in International Hospitality Management (MIHM) programme students. The hospitality roundtable focused on taking stock of the current situation and planning for the future. A mix of senior hospitality experts graced this event and shared their views on the current and future trends. SHTE was privileged to have Mr. Bipan Kapur, General Manager from Renaissance Kuala Lumpur whose one key advice was to “commoditise your skills and passion”. He predicts a shortage in human resource as the pandemic situation recovers and assures that Marriott is still focused on expansion.

Mr. Alex Porteous, General Manager, Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur asserted that “a masters prepares you for the future” and the hotel business model needs to be more resilient and responsive. He encouraged the students to “Be Curious! Be Friendly! Be Objective! Be Patient! Be Flexible! Be Agile!”. Mr. Mohamed Solah, Cluster General Manager, Zaya Hospitality, Dubai, an alumna of the Bachelor (Hons) Hospitality and Tourism Studies, class of 2009 was also the invited guests who spoke on Zaya.


Since its opening, his luxury property is running at 90% occupancy and looking forward to more hotel openings. He affirms that there are future opportunities for master graduates depending on “how much you want to invest in yourself?”. MIHM students discussed the idea of the new women-only hotel business venture with the speakers along with the necessary physiology and mental skills needed in this pandemic situation as well the availability of government assistance to help the hospitality industry to weather this storm.

The Taylor’s Barista Club always believe that by standing on the shoulder of giants, we get to see even further. Hence, the club was privileged to have a special guest speaker, Mr. Liew Karweng (2019 ASEAN Brewers Cup Champion & 2019 MBrC 2nd Runner Up) to share his experience working as barista. This event “A Night with Karweng” was attended by audience of shared interest; to build a career path in the coffee industry, on 19th June 2021, via Zoom.


Taylor’s Barista Club President, Ng Yong Pong organized the first guest speaker event of the year with an objective for Taylorians to gain a deeper knowledge of coffee making and exposure towards barista career. Our goal was to inspire and give guidance to anyone who is interested in the coffee industry. The sharing session discussed information about how he becomes a professional barista, the challenges he had to overcome and some of his future plans.


Taylor’s Barista Club is under the purview of Student Engagement & Leadership Development (S.E.A.L), Student Development, Centre of Future Learning, with Mr. Chiew Boon Tian, Senior Lecturer, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events as the Advisor.
