The US elections has recently concluded, and international students in the US and those keen to pursue higher education in the United States have been eager to find out what is in store for them and how the election results will impact US-ASEAN relations, particularly in the area of international higher education. Taylor’s American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) organized a free webinar on the topic “US Election 2020: Impact on International Higher Education” on 28 November from 10:00-11:30 am.

Three eminent speakers were invited to discuss issues related to international relations, educational opportunities, student visas among other things and shared perspectives on the future of higher education in the US under the Biden administration. They are as follows:

  1. Professor Dr Shakila Yacob is the Executive Director of the International Institute of Public Policy & Management (INPUMA), University of Malaya. Both a business historian and political scientist, Prof. Shakila's research interests are in the areas of business history, international business and comparative politics.

  2. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Guido Benny’s holds a Ph.D. in Strategic and Security Analysis from the National University of Malaysia. He is currently serving as the Program Director for the Bachelor of Social Science at the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Taylor's University.

  3. Ms. Prema Ponnudurai is currently the Head of Department, Department of Liberal Arts and Humanities at Taylor’s University. She is an alumna of the US State Department, Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and completed a Fellowship as a Visiting Scholar at New York University (NYU).

A lot of effort, not to mention a substantial amount of time and budget, goes into participation in exhibitions. How much do you need to prepare to ensure that your investment yields the expected returns? The School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events (SHTE) was indeed fortunate to be able to gain insights from Industry Leaders such as Mr. Kenneth Fong, Sales Director at Messe Worldwide and Honorary Secretary of Malaysia Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS).

In an online session entitled “The Secrets to Successful Exhibition Marketing” via Zoom, Mr. Fong shared his experience and practical tips on the topic. The attendees posed many questions to Mr. Fong in hope of getting a head start when they enter the exhibitions industry. Although specifically targeted for events management students, this online session also benefited those intending to participate in exhibitions as part of their job scope.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Guido Benny, Programme Director, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (SLAS) was invited to a Roundtable Discussion with Australia’s recently appointed Ambassador to ASEAN, H.E Will Nankervis. The invitation was sent by the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. The virtual roundtable discussion was conducted on 28 October 2020 involving 8 renowned International Relations scholars and thinkers in Malaysia.

The general topic for the roundtable is ‘ASEAN pre-occupations and priorities in the lead-up to the summit’ and what role Australia is expected to play in ASEAN Summit 2020. By citing his 2019 empirical research result on public opinion of Great Powers among the public in Malaysia and Indonesia, Dr. Guido Benny provided his views and suggestions on the International Relations and Diplomacy issues and the role that Australia should play in Southeast Asia regionalism.
