Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management (FSLM), and Centre for Research and Innovation in Tourism (CRiT), Taylor’s University organized the Postgraduate Research Colloquium (PGRC) 2021 that was held virtually from 31st July – 1st August 2021. PGRC is an universal platform for promoting research, discussing avenues for global and contemporary issues, providing a network with top-notch senior academicians, and facilitating publication opportunities for postgraduate students and young scholars. The event is organized annually, which encourages researchers to join and share their research knowledge, to learn unique and new research approaches from nobles, and provides researchers with various advanced research workshops.

More than 1000 participants from 60 different countries registered for the PGRC 2021 (Algeria, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bhutan, Botswana, Brazil, Cambodia, Central Africa, China, Cuba, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ital, Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Morocco, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe).


Fifty-one postgraduate students from Hospitality, Tourism & Event; Media & Communication; Food Studies & Gastronomy and Education presented their research in 6 different concurrent sessions during the two days of the colloquium. Four research workshops were also executed, offered by eminent international speakers during the PGRC event.


  • Fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA): What? Why? and How?, Dr. Hossein Olya, The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, attended by 300 participants.

  • Mixed-Methods Research, Professor Dr. Babak Taheri, Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom, attended by 233 participants.

  • There were two speakers for the workshop; Publication in Top Tier Journals: Challenges for Postgraduates and Young Researchers, Dr. Thien Lei Mee, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia, Difficult Roads Often Lead to Beautiful Destinations: The Art of Publishing in High-Ranking Journals, Dr. Nisreen Ameen, Royal Holloway, University of London, United Kingdom, attended by 246 participants.

  • Designing a Qualitative Ethnographic Research, Dr. Zilmiyah Kamble, James Cook University, Singapore, attended by 208 participants.

Interviewed on BFM, as people continue to grapple with the prolonged social isolation and financial uncertainties amidst the COVID-19 situation, what toll is this taking on people’s mental health, and is this contributing to a rise in suicidal ideation?


BFM interviewed Mr. Justin Victor, Chairman of Befrienders KL and Senior Lecturer, School of Media and Communication, as well as Ms. Anita Abu Bakar, President of the Mental Illness Awareness & Support Association or MIASA, to discuss the impact of the pandemic on rising suicide cases and the role of helplines in lending an ear to those who need it most.


The impact of how reporting of suicides is done was discussed and Mr. Justin Victor shared about the contagion effect and how important appropriate portrayal of incidences is crucial to avoid triggering others from attempting suicide. He also spoke of the basic human communication that the general public can do to begin helping someone in distress.

The webinar “Sembang Chef: Catering Set Up Activities-Fundamental & Live Experience” has gathered 170 participants, students, teachers-PVMA Secondary School & lecturers from Kolej Vokasional (KV) from Perlis to Sabah. This initiative is a collaboration between PVMA SMK Putrajaya, Kolej Vokasional & Taylor’s University School of Food Studies and Gastronomy aimed at providing a platform for a dialogue between Food Studies and Gastronomy by featuring the expertise of Chef Mohamad Zamri Bin Idris and Chef Sharizan Azali Bin Mohamed Zamzuri from School of Food Studies and Gastronomy, Taylor’s University, Malaysia & Research Chef Association (USA) and Cikgu Saptuyah Binti Latip, Head of PVMA SMK Putrajaya as the moderator.


The webinar has attracted the interests of diverse stakeholders, students, teachers and lecturers from PVMA secondary and Kolej Vokasional within Malaysia. The topics covered during the webinar based on PVMA Catering Set Up were:




  • Basic Catering Set Up activities such as what is a buffet?, Kitchen Layout & Flow Buffet Set Up


  • Knowledge on Buffet Set Up in hotels, cruise ships and restaurants.



The purpose of this webinar was to give better understanding of Buffet Set Up from the students’ perspectives, the lay out, flow and equipment, which will be useful during their theoretical and practical exam. Moreover, it gives the teachers and lecturers a better understanding of how to conduct their practical classes to suite the modern and advance buffet set up, to prepare the students to the real-world scenario.
